I am trying to do a directed intro to etymology study and I need a good textbook or two to work through.  Anyone have any good suggestions?  Cheap is a plus.  I have very little time to put this together.
THANKS!

You might want to take a look at:

1. Antoine Meillet. 1967. The Comparative Method in Historical Linguistics.
2. Yakov Malkiel. 1993. Etymology.
3. Eve E Sweetser. 1990. From Etymology to Pragmatics: Metaphorical and Cultural Aspects of Semantic Structure.

There is also Philip Durkin’s, Oxford Guide to Etymology, OUP, 2009.

And Anatoly Liberman’s Word Origins… and How We Know Them: Etymology for Everyone (Oxford University Press, 2005) and the more scholarly An Analytic Dictionary of English Etymology (University of Minnesota Press, 2008).  For further resources, consult his new A Bibliography of English Etymology ((University of Minnesota Press, 2009).
