All I know is, the phrase “under God” ruins the rythm of the pledge.  It sounds better as it was recited when my father was in grade school (although he seems to have forgotten how it was said in his day).

As much as I object to “under God” being inserted in this national blathering, I must say that the rhythm is actually improved by it’s addition. I wish it weren’t.
