Not mentioned much nowadays, this is the north of England name for either a child born on 1st May or the May equivalent of April Fool. Link about Mayday in the north of England.  This, btw, is an excellent school site which the pupils research and maintain with the help of their teachers.

Has anyone in the States or any other country heard of “May goslings”?

No, but my grandson was born on May 1, so I will be using this term.  Thanks!
