No, it certainly wouldn’t.  (But the cases aren’t parallel, are they, ElizaD)

It may feel more parallel to someone who is the object of the prejudice.  It’s always easy to be sanguine about slings and arrows aimed at somebody other than oneself.

By “the cases are different” I meant that the British are not a persecuted and vilified group anywhere, even in Australia. But I do agree that my levity was ill-considered, and the story had better not been told. It wasn’t meant to hurt anyone, and I’m truly sorry if it gave offence.

Thank you, lh and lionello.  The story retold on the basis of “I’m English, had he supposed I was Israeli?” apparently loses its humour.  It would have been better had Dave deleted your post, as I requested at the time.

I reserve deletion for spam and truly over-the-top insults and offenses. I don’t want, nor do I want anyone, to be placed in the role of correctness monitor who reviews and censors posts. That’s a sure way to kill conversation and exchange of ideas to have people wonder if their statements will be squelched by some authority. It’s better to work out problems in the discussion as in this case.

That is an unimpeachable procedure and an ideal attitude.  In other words, it’s the same tack I take on my blog.

I was told that in colonial times the Dutch and English were rivals. The English developed a huge series of negative connotation starting with Dutch

But watch this space for further updates.
