Not the same thing.  The Shiraz Lionello is talking about is probably the wine that is also known as Syrah.

It was Dr. Fortran, not me (my potations are not nearly so refined).
Several Israel wineries list “Shiraz” among the wines they produce. IIRC other countries do, too.
Wikipedia concurs with Faldage and offers a historical tit-bit or two to go with the wine.

Just to confirm, yes indeed it was red wine I was drinking and the grape type was Shiraz. The one in question came from South Africa via the Fly Half Bar in the Nether Abbey Hotel in North Berwick.

As lionello points out, there is a wealth of information on the Wikipedia page about the grape type, far more than I had ever bothered to find out.
