Germanic dominance of Italy

Seems to me (in my half-ignorance) that the domination of Italy by Germanic rulers from the middle of the 1st millennium to the middle of the 2nd millennium had relatively _little_ impact on the common language that came (eventually) to be the modern language of Italian. There seem to be very few borrowings in Italian from Germanic languages.

Is this surprising? Have I misunderstood something?
