Dead Ringer

I heard this term was coined during the black plague.  People would have a rope tied to their wrist connected to a bell to ensure they were not buried alive.  This sounds fishy to me.  Anyone know the actual origin?

You’re right to doubt that story; it’s completely bogus.  “Dead ringer” only goes back to the late 19th century; see an old discussion of it here.
