Strunk always strikes me as though it is the past form of some obsolete verb.

Thanks, lh. But I still had to go to wikipedia for a simpler explanation--nicely linked in the Log’s piece. I was hung up over the meaning of “slash.” It refers to the punctuation mark, hence the joke.
