No one has compented on the word “wolf”. I feel I deserve an answer.

Most dogs make that sound.

Frankly, Etymolgy on Line doesn’t say it does nor that it doesn’t. It does provide another link to an interesting article about (were)wolves.

WNT says that the suggested relation to a PIE root meaning ‘to tear’ can’t be proven. Doesn’t help much either.
