Metcalf’s factors are cumulative, not exclusionary. If infomercial is obtrusive, it can still be predicted to survive if it scores high enough in the other categories.

Similarly, blog and web are very productive, forming lots of daughter words. But blogumentary and webumentary are not productive and wouldn’t score high in this category. Besides, I just noted that blogumentary existed, a daughter word of blog; I didn’t say it was likely to survive.

As for dialing phones, we still input a number into the phone. The concept is still very much with us, even if the physical action has changed. It’s still an enduring concept. My counterexample of ripping, however, is likely to die once the physical medium of the CD disappears; as dialing would disappear if phones went away.
