When proofreaders work in teams, one reading aloud from the copy while the other checks the new version, they have to read all abbreviations as such rather than expanding them: Ltd becomes “littud,” & is read “et,” and so on.  (And homonyms have to be audibly distinguished, so you say, e.g., SAHNT-ruh if “centre” occurs in the text—this is in an American context, obviously—and stress the “pal” when the word is “principal” as opposed to “principle.")
