It’s that time of year again? What are your favorites for word of the year for 2011?

Some suggestions:

Arab Spring
occupy
hacktivism
facepalm

Be sure to stretch your mind back to the beginning of the year and try to remember what was big back then.

Preloved defined as “previously owned or used; second-hand”.

I have this fantasy of starting a dating service online for divorced, widowed etc. called Preloved.

My Week-at-a-Glance entry for Jan. 1 says “Strip steak & baked pot’s w/ Malbec—delicious!” so I nominate Malbec as word of the year.

I am in agreement with those psychologists who theorize that time is perceived as going faster with age.  Today is an example.  It seems like only a short time ago that we were discussing WOTY for 2010.  I feel old today.

I would suggest “cloud’.  I know it’s been around awhile in tech circles, but it’s starting to find its way into everyday use now (I overheard a septuagenarian use it over Thanksgiving dinner).

I like your suggestion, Droogie.

This one went right past me, I’m afraid.  what new meaning of “cloud” is this?

Something about data floating around everywhere instead of sitting quietly in your computer.

This Wikipedia entry has a thorough explanation.  But with new products such has Apple’s iCloud and recent marketing campaigns I hear it creeping into common speech outside of tech and business.

I’m with you, Dave, on “Arab Spring” and “occupy.”

I’d also like to suggest that “competitive shopping” be considered.  We’ve had it for a few years now, but given this year’s increased post-Thanksgiving shopping mayhem as well as the downturn in the economy causing folks to search out the best deals, I think it’s appropriate to think about this phrase as a potential nominee.

I have this fantasy of starting a dating service online for divorced, widowed etc. called Preloved.

this fantasy dovetails with one of my own. Many of my fellow-citizens spend inordinate sums of money on lavish wedding parties at Wedding Halls, with heaps of food, bathtubs of drink, Dekabels of noise, etc., for the delectation of crowds of guests, who may number up to several hundreds (some of them even know the bride, or the groom). According to published statistics, 50% of the marriages celebrated at these Babylonian feasts, will be over within 5 years or less. My idea is to cash in on these statistics, with - a Divorce Hall!
I even have ready an advertising plug: “Why Leave Your Marriage with your Tail between your Legs? Celebrate the Second Happiest Day of Your Lives! Part in Style, at PRE-LOVED HALL!” (special discount for second-time-rounders). I’m interviewing backers at the moment. Send me a private email.......

Celebrate the Second Happiest Day of Your Lives! Part in Style, at PRE-LOVED HALL!”

You had to put the hyphen in there.  Without it I would pronounce it /’prɛloʊvɛd/.

Embellishing Lionello’s fantasy.  The ceremony would be presided over by Darth Vaders & Darth Mutters who would proclaim, “May divorce be with you.”

Edit for redundant word.

I might add the verb to curate, as it is applied to online material.

It’s not a new sense though. The OED has an entry with citations going back to 1982. But I’ve been seeing it a lot lately.

Good Lord. Once again - truth is stranger than fantasy.......

The ceremony would be presided over by Darth Vaders & Darth Mutters who would proclaim, “May divorce be with you.”

Hahahahahaha!!!! Rarest of occurrences - a really witty pun!  Thank you, Skibberoo!
