I’m watching the 1961 French movie L’Enclos at the moment and one of the subtitles has given me pause. Of one of the prisoners (a German) it is said, ”Speaks French and Oualot.

No relevant googlits that I can see for Oualot. I would have thought it a typo but one can unmistakeably hear Oualot on the soundtrack. Any ideas?

Pronounced /wɑːlo/?  Could it be Walloon?  I.e., a Belgian dialect of French.

Of course! I think you’ve nailed it. The pronunciation leans towards oo-ah-lo (could never get the hang of phonetic symbols) but I’m almost sure Walloon is meant.

Although that’s probably right, note the following:

Amazon has this book:

Un chef nègre oualot dans son intérieur
http://www.amazon.fr/chef-nègre-oualot-dans-intérieur/dp/B0000DRVW7
Date de publication: 1861 Gravure SENEGAL Grav . acier représentant 160x240

And also note that there was a kingdom called Oualo by the French (and called Waalo in English) in the region of Senegal.
