What does it mean? Just “big mess”? Or is there something else in there?

Could you give us a little context?  I have no idea what you’re talking about.

When I saw the title, “mess” as in a military facility sprang to mind. And “hot mess” would indicate freshly cooked, still steaming meals. I might have heard it in that sense, but I can’t recall a specific instance.

It’s a fairly common expression on the net in my experience, typically applied to a person who is making a mess of their life, often in a very public way.  A typical example would be Lindsay Lohan.  I’ve never been clear if “hot” implied “sexy, despite the ravages of drink and drugs”, or was intended to imply even more rapid decay (as in, hot garbage decays faster and smells worse than cold garbage).

Edit: urbandictionary.com has postings supporting both interpretations, and adds to the latter the suggestion that it refers to to fresh, hot, dog feces.

I have been encountering the phrase “hot mess” a heck of a lot in American columns, and in comments on news items and so forth.

Yea. mylaps.com is and always has been a big hot mess.

Seems to me to have sprung up fairly quickly, e.g. in the last year (but I might be misremembering). At first I thought it just meant a mess, but it now seems to mean something worse, e.g. something that is seriously dangerous.

Those clearly don’t appear to carry the “sexy” connotation.

By happenstance, today’s dailyoftheday carried a link to this:
Here’s why alcohol turns you into an emotional hot mess.

The first place I encountered this phrase was on the TV show Project Runway, which my wife used to watch regularly a few years ago.  When one of the contestants would try to create something innovative and fail, a “hot mess” was the result.  One look at me would be enough to convince anyone that I know nothing about the fashion industry, so I can’t say if that’s where it originated.
