While strumming on my keyboard I serendipitously landed on this URL:  http://www.damninteresting.com/the-baader-meinhof-phenomenon/

I think it’s time that Aldi and/or the Forum formally registers diegogarcity and informs the OED and Co., of the presence of usurpers. Has any Forum member come across this so-called B-M-P before?

Dr Techie, you’re good at this sort of thing - do you have a link to aldi’s original quote?  Even without wordorigins citations there are well over 4,000 citations on the net so Something Has To Be Done.  Aldi, your time for getting a GAGging* Order may have come.

It’s here, from 323 August 2003.

I take your point, op. A neutral term is needed. Perhaps we could choose another island in the Indian Ocean, and stick an -ity on the end.

None come to mind, except ........... no, diegogarcity doesn’t do it.

When you Google “diegogarcity,” the first hit is the Urban Dictionary entry, which gets it right including the reference to Serendip, but doesn’t mention Aldi or Wordorigins.

"33 August 2003.”

This new metric calendar is amazing.

Yes, I’ve seen it used in various places over the years.  I think it’s more recent than “diegogarcity,” but of course I can’t be sure.

It was a throwaway gag initially but it pleases me that it’s been of some service.  I haven’t come across BMP but it wouldn’t surprise me if there were yet more terms out there for the same phenomenon. Time will tell if one or any stay the distance.
