I suspect that Online Etymology Dictionary may not be this Forum’s most-loved source

Actually, it’s a pretty good source in general.  It’s not the OED, of course, but then what is?

Well, actually it is the OED second edition, at least mostly. Most of its entries are simply minor rewordings of the OED etymologies.

If you don’t have access to the OED, it’s a decent resource.
