http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2014/05/quote_websites_are_frequently_inaccurate_but_we_use_them_anyway.html

This is a topic we’ve discussed before, and there’s not much new there, apart from a plausible speculation on how a quote may have passed from a Peanuts comic strip to being attributed to Arthur Schopenhauer, but you may find it amusing.

I’ve seen some wild mismatches between quotation and author before but that one is a doozy. The thought of Schopenhauer penning “Just remember, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed.” still has me chuckling.

The quotation, “Youth is wasted on the young” is attributed to George Bernard Shaw, but also to Oscar Wilde. I wonder who originated the quote; they were almost the same age.

My theory is that many famous quotations are constantly paraphrased and their true origin never to be found.

“Originality is nothing but judicious imitation.”
- Voltaire

Facebook appears to be a fertile breeding ground for bogus quotes who’s bogusness is blatantly, gut-wrenchingly obvious. Quotes that do not represent either the tone or the sentiments of the attributed author. Just as land creatures suddenly thrived following the oxygenation of the atmosphere, these bogus quotes may have lain dormant for centuries, just waiting for Facebook to build a network of ignorance and stupidity where the bogus quote could rule.

I believe it was Yogi Berra who said, “I never said everything that I said.”
