My personal spontaneous reaction to the claimed Cromwell quote is that an ass-load at that time would very reasonably be an amount that could be loaded on a donkey - no necessary relation to shitload.
And in that context, when did US ass and UK arse usage diverge? What would Cromwell have meant by ass?

The divergence is a 19th century one. Cromwell would have meant a donkey.
