I was frankly a little taken aback to see that at Language Log, since it seemed to have nothing to do with language, but I guess everybody needs pageviews.

Give it a few centuries and written language may be back to pictographs. Now there’s progress for you!

It certainly does have something to do with language, specifically how graphical elements can be used to supplement or enhance language. It’s similar to discussions of emoji or body language and gestures in conjunction with verbal communication.

Yeah, I can see the rationalization, but they seem to find a lot of ways to shoehorn hot political material under the rubric of language.  However, I’m aware I am geezing.

(edit) Still not sure if I understand it.

I hadn’t come across it either, lionello. I tried to google it but was still confused (some seem to think it’s the exclamation Jeez (for Jesus) spelt differently). Doc’s answer clears my confusion.

I assumed Doc T. made it up, but I understood it immediately and picked it up for my own use.

I wish I could claim it as my own invention:  I think I saw it first in Dave Barry Turns Forty, which had a chapter called “How to Geeze”.  It’s such a useful back-formation that I’m surprised it hasn’t caught on more widely.

In the US, the word “geezer” means an old guy.

But when I was in England, I heard it used to mean any guy; basically synonymous with “bloke.” Is this still the case?

It could be except for that little tongue flap at the end.
