I recently had cause to ask a nurse, “What does orthopedic actually mean?” She replied, “Bone doctor. Ortho ... bone.” She was a good nurse.
As I descended into unconsciousness, I wondered why a word with roots seemingly meaning “straight child” should end up meaning “related to surgery of the bones and active muscles.”

So it turns out that the term orthopedics referred mainly to the field of non-surgical correction of skeletal deformities in children, basically up until the early 20th century.
