I have moved into a new property in Carlisle and found a stone with a date of 1848 with four letters or symbols which no one seems to know what it means, two of the letters look like symbols, it’s not Latin I think , or old English, one suggestion of Gaelic - any ideas? I’ve attached a picture. Grateful for any help.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it looks like RINH in blackletter, somewhat crudely cast into bronze or brass.  I have no guess as to the signification.

The last letter looks to me like a blackletter F, not H, so RINF. But I too have no clue as to its significance.

Difficult to tell, with the corrosion and apparently low-res casting.

Is there any chance at all that last letter is a Y? Riny, a woman’s name?

Which Carlisle? It might provide some context, though I doubt it.

Is the stone in the ground? Some context might help, as well as geographical location (in a field/pub/yard etc)? What do you know about the history of the surroundings? Could you provide a photo with the date included?
