Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Probably will mostly continue to lurk.

I learn something new every time I read something on this forum. Perhaps not what the post is about, to be sure, but I appreciate greatly the camaraderie among the regular people here. ("Camaraderie"? I had to look up the spelling. Which is why I love English.)

Anyway. I’m a cataloging librarian at a medium-sized public library in the Midwestern U.S. and I will try hard not to peeve or be otherwise generally annoying on the board(s).

Cat.

Librarians and cats are some of my favorite people.

The profession seems to attract individuals who derive pleasure from providing information and assistance to others. This is true of all librarians I’ve ever had dealings with, with no exceptions. I’d have gladly married a librarian, had one been available, nubile and willing at the time.....but no, it was not to be.
Welcome, Cat. I’m sure you will be an asset to this forum. BTW, you have nothing to fear from me. My statement was entirely free of any aggressive intent.

You’re very welcome here, cat, as are all newbies. The camaraderie you mention has been built up over many years now, a multi-national group of people with an abiding interest in language. We have strong opinions, we have our ups and downs, we laugh, we bicker - just like any family. Kudos to Dave for fostering this unique group.

Why does “Yet another test post to activate membership” show up in Meta Discussion as having a new comment (by Eliza) when the thread is no longer in that section?

Because it is in that section. I moved it from test to meta.

When I moved it, I forgot to uncheck the box to leave a link in the test section, so it shows up in both. But it doesn’t (at least to me), show up in the test section with a new post notification.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Off to read about daubers now, because I’m that behind.
