Now that I think about it [...] Language is confusing!

Be thankful we haven’t delved into neighboring Paraguay’s nomenclature.  It’s simple in English,
but in Spanish you may choose from-

República del Paraguay Republic of the Paraguay
El Paraguay The Paraguay
Paraguay Paraguay
Tetã Paraguái Official name in Guaraní, the other legal language of the country, spoken by 90-95% of the people.

All they have in common is the name of the river from which the nation takes its name.

I visited Paraguay in the late ‘60s and bought a textbook of Guaraní, but alas never actually learned it. I’ve still got the book, though!

All I really remember of Guaraní is kurusu veve, literally cross in flight, for airplane.
