Just what does the Match signify in the magazine’s title? Is it a French term, or simply the English word? It’s always struck me as an odd title.

The French Wikipedia says it followed on from a sporting weekly, Match.

Edited to add: Media Monoliths by Mark Tungate (Google Books) confirms this.

Just to complete the answer, “Match” was borrwed from english into french in the late 1820’s, originally used as a term in horse competions.
