I’d always assumed that the medieval use of mystery to mean craft, trade or calling stemmed from the fact that the trades were, well, mysterious to outsiders. As ever, assumption proves dangerous.

OED tells us that mystery, n, 2 is an “altered form of classical Latin ministerium MINISTRY n. by confusion with mysterium MYSTERY, n, 1”

One more mistaken belief swept away, although it’s taken half a century to get rid of that one!
