With Catalonian independence being in the news at the moment, I thought this Wikipedia article on their language is worthy of discussion.

Well, right away I learned something: the existence of the Italian commune of Alghero.

I didn’t know about the strong differences between the Eastern and Western dialect blocks, so I thank you for posting it.

I might mention that Catalan has a frighteningly complex system of combining weak pronouns; the table in my Teach Yourself book is four pages long.

Fascinating twenty minutes reading that, thanks Eliza.

As a former student of old French (and in particular, Proven├žale) and Italian, interesting to see the elements from those languages still very much in vigour in modern Catalan.

The quick guide on pronunciation was particularly appreciated. I used to holiday there and never knew how to pronounce most of the most obvious words, like ‘caixa’ (bank)!

How to pronounce the name of the president of Catalonia. (Warning: Second embedded video is autoplaying, which is annoying, but you can just hit the pause button.)
