Where does the verb come from? OED has simply of obscure origin but it sounds as if it’s older than the first citation of 1809.

My guess would be that it’s a portmanteau of slip/slide and lather. The earliest sense in the OED (old entry) would bear this out, “to slip or slide; to move in a sliding or trailing manner.”
