OED comes up empty for this one. All I can glean from a quick google is that it’s a ‘Southern saying’. Oh, and there’s a 1956 movie of the name. At the risk of getting egg on my face (because there’s a well-known source, or worse, that I’ve asked it before) is there a whence or approximate when for this?

The movie is based on a 1950 novel of the same title by Robert Hardy Andrews. There have also been at least two stage plays (very different plots and subject matter) with that title since then. But I’ve got nothing on the phrase before the novel.
