Every now and then I’ve encountered the phrase “belly pooch” or “abdominal pooch” and have written it off as a moderately common typo for pouch.

It seems to have become a standard term of art in the fitness industry. I’m not sure whether it is in fact a variant of pouch, or has some connection to the term meaning dog ... or something else.

“Damn that belly pooch! It’s not only unflattering but also speaks loudly of your unhealthy food choices. It is a glaring problem for new mothers and also those who have recently lost a lot of weight.”
