Why are championship games in American football called bowls?

I have no argument with the substance, but note that that first citation on “Rose Bowl” can be improved upon.  The earliest I find in a quick check is an item in the Monrovia (California) Daily News of November 23, 1922, discussing a “patriotic pageant” to be held in ‘the new Tournament of Roses stadium--"the Rose Bowl"--in Pasadena...’
