Thank you, kurwamac and oecolampadius, for helping me to change my beliefs. I was quite wrong about Yiddish (not surprising --- my Jewish roots, such as they are, ar all Sephardic)...... and hurrah for Wikipedia, which also has an interesting and carefully annotated article about Ladino.
