OED ‘Project update’ (replaces Newsletter)

Quite honestly I can’t see what was wrong with the name Newsletter, but there you go.

Anyhow, here is the latest OED Project Update, including brief but interesting pieces on What’s in a new word? and The Walrus and the Waistcoat, the latter concerning JR Tolkien and the OED.

Today the Oxford English Dictionaries has a blog for Tolkein’s 126th birthday and does a nice rendering of his etymology of Walrus for the OED back in the 20s. “Whale Horse” and the coincidence of the rare occurance of some young Walruses vacationing in the Orkneys.
