Arizona

The name Arizona is native American, probably from the Papago arizonac, meaning little spring or few springs. Although there are other possibilities so this origin should not be taken as a certainty.
Many believe it to come from the Spanish arida (dry) + zona (area). This is certainly not the ultimate origin, although it is likely that this Spanish combination influenced the form and adoption of the word in both Spanish and English.

Some folks believe the name Arizona came from a word in the Basque language since there were basque sheep herders in this area early on.

You wouldn’t happen to know which Basque word, would you?
I’m suspicious. Basque is one of those languages that gets a lot of false claims for etymologies, so it sets the alarm bells ringing whenever I hear claims of a Basque word origin.
