Grose, F. (1963). A classical dictionary of the vulgar tongue. New York, Barnes & Noble.
One of the earliest slang dictionaries, this is a classic source for slang etymologies. Grose published the first edition in 1785, the second edition in 1788, and the third edition was published posthumously in 1796. In 1811, Grose’s dictionary was re-edited by someone unknown and published as the Lexicon Balatronicum. Subsequent editions were also published in 1821 and 1823. In 1931, Eric Partridge reprinted the 1796 3rd edition with added commentary. This work was reprinted in 1963.
