Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue; Bryson, Bill; Avon Books; 1990.

A history of the English language for the layman. Very readable, but contains inaccuracies and a lack of authoritative citations. Bryson’s footnotes of etymologies are often to modern media instead of to well-researched sources, and as a result are too often wrong.
