Slate takes on the question of what to call an unmarried life partner of the opposite sex.

My vote would to revive paramour.

I am particularly fond a phrase in common use in the African-American dialect here in southern Louisiana.  The term is “wife in law” which, I believe, refers to the practice of common law marriage.
